Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar Dies While Serving Life Sentence in 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case

Former Congress Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar, who was serving a life sentence in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, died on Thursday. Sources at Safdarjung Hospital confirmed his death. However, the hospital has not yet provided any specific information regarding the cause of his death. Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on December 17, 2018, in a case related to the killing of five Sikhs and the burning of a gurdwara during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He was subsequently lodged in Tihar Jail. In another development, a Delhi court in February 2025 sentenced Kumar to life imprisonment in a separate case concerning the killing of two Sikh men during the 1984 riots. Sajjan Kumar had served as a Lok Sabha member three times and represented the Outer Delhi constituency. He was regarded as a prominent leader of the Congress party during his political career. Following his conviction in 2018 in connection with the 1984 riots, Kumar resigned from the Congress party.
