India's Manisha Bhanwala has revealed that the disappointment of missing out on a medal at the Asian Games motivated her to achieve a historic milestone by winning gold at the World Wrestling Championships.
The 29-year-old wrestler created history by becoming India's first-ever female senior world champion after clinching the gold medal in the 59kg freestyle category.
Manisha received a warm welcome at Indira Gandhi International Airport after returning from the championship last night, along with other Indian medal winners.
Speaking to PTI Videos, she said returning empty-handed from the Asian Games had been mentally challenging. However, with the World Wrestling Championships scheduled just 10 days later, she continued training without a break.
Manisha said she had a strong feeling that she would create history this time. She also acknowledged the support extended by the Wrestling Federation of India, which helped her in her journey.
Comeback from 0-6 Deficit in Final
Recalling her memorable final against American wrestler Abigail Nette, Manisha said her opponent's aggressive approach in the opening stages eventually worked to her advantage.
She was trailing 0-6 during the bout but managed to turn the contest around by capitalising on her opponent's attacking style.
Manisha produced an impressive comeback to secure an 8-6 victory and claim the world championship gold medal.
Manisha Eyes 57kg Category for Olympic Preparation
The Indian wrestler has competed in different weight categories during her career. She previously participated in the 65kg and later the 62kg categories at the junior level.
With growing experience and a focus on the Olympics, Manisha has now decided to move to the 57kg weight category.
Her historic world championship victory marks a significant achievement for Indian women's wrestling and reflects how setbacks can become a source of motivation for greater success.
