Trump Proposes Renaming Strait of Hormuz to “Trump Strait”

03 Sep, 2026 08:45 AM

Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz to “Trump Strait.” The proposal was made on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, where he argued that if America maintains control over the vital waterway, renaming it could be considered. Trump emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz should be associated with the United States, reiterating his claim that American forces have secured control over the region. According to the White House, U.S. military operations have included removing Iranian mines, escorting nearly 1,500 commercial vessels under American protection, and redirecting ships attempting to break U.S. blockades. The statement comes at a time of heightened confrontation between Washington and Tehran. On September 1, U.S. Central Command confirmed a series of airstrikes targeting Iranian military installations. These strikes reportedly destroyed air defense systems, radar facilities, naval assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communication infrastructure. The United States has also continued to enforce a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical focal point in the conflict, given its strategic importance for global shipping routes and energy supplies. Control over this narrow passageway has long been a matter of geopolitical contention, and Trump’s remarks have further intensified the debate.
