Documentary Reveals Alleged Interference and Fixing in Canadian Cricket

20 Apr, 2026 08:42 AM

After alleged deep involvement in kabaddi, gangsters linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi network have now reportedly turned their attention to cricket in Canada. A major investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), aired under The Fifth Estate, has brought forward serious allegations of intimidation, threats, and match-fixing within Canadian cricket. The CBC documentary titled “Corruption, Crime & Cricket Canada” reveals that individuals claiming to represent the Bishnoi gang allegedly threatened national team players in Surrey, British Columbia, in July 2025. The purpose of these threats was reportedly to secure support for the rapid elevation of Indian-origin cricketer Dilpreet Singh Bajwa as team captain. Bajwa, originally from Batala in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district and a former student of DAV Centenary School, moved to Canada in 2020. He was appointed captain just weeks before the 2026 T20 World Cup, a decision that reportedly surprised selectors, coaching staff, and senior players. The CBC report, along with international media coverage, also highlighted that the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit is investigating Bajwa over a suspicious over bowled during a T20 World Cup match against New Zealand in Chennai. In that over, he delivered a no-ball, a wide, and conceded 15 runs. He was questioned by the ICC, and reports indicate that his phone was also examined as part of the probe. Meanwhile, Canadian police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Delta, British Columbia, are investigating incidents including shootings at residences linked to the case, death threats, and allegations of interference. According to sources cited in the documentary, the primary aim of the intimidation was to protect Bajwa’s position, along with that of another player. Former officials of Cricket Canada have denied any knowledge of such threats. However, the board continues to face broader allegations of poor governance and external interference. Investigations by the ICC, Canadian law enforcement agencies, and Cricket Canada are ongoing, and no formal charges have been filed so far.
