Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Saturday to lead the 18th BRICS Summit under India’s presidency. Accompanied by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, PM Modi joined global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at the summit venue. Representatives from BRICS member states gathered for a closed-door session themed "Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism," alongside visiting the "Bharat Innovates Exhibition." Addressing the summit, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that over the past two decades, BRICS has established a strong and influential global presence. He clarified that the bloc is not targeted against any nation or institution, but functions to safeguard the interests of the Global South and maintain global balance. Outlining solutions to international challenges and structural reforms, PM Modi introduced a 10-point roadmap for global governance focused on reforming international institutions, promoting sustainable development, tackling climate change, and advancing inclusive technological cooperation. Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday morning to attend the event, marking his first visit to India in nearly seven years. He is accompanied by Cai Qi, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning noted that this meeting between PM Modi and President Xi follows their previous interactions in Kazan and Tianjin, reaffirming Beijing's commitment to enhancing strategic communication, managing differences, and deepening bilateral partnership. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi held a bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The Ethiopian leader, accompanied by Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos, was received at the airport by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth with military honors. According to the Ministry of Defence, discussions focused on strengthening India-Ethiopia defense cooperation, including joint training, defense industry collaboration, and UN peacekeeping efforts. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE became full BRICS members in January 2024, followed by Indonesia in January 2025. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is attending the summit as a leader of a BRICS partner country. The two leaders discussed strategic economic cooperation, trade, investment, digital transformation, and sustainable development. As part of his visit, the Malaysian Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Kerala to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, and Grand Mufti of India Sheikh Aboubakr Ahmad.
