Daily Suraj: 58 Years of Trusted and Impartial Journalism

The Punjabi daily newspaper Suraj has carved a distinct identity in the field of impartial journalism since its inception. The publication was founded nearly 58 years ago by S. Harminder Singh Ahluwalia.

In its early days, the newspaper was printed using treadle machines, with composition done through traditional lead type. As the printing industry evolved, S. Ahluwalia demonstrated remarkable foresight by transitioning the newspaper to offset printing and introducing computer-based typesetting.

His progressive vision led to a steady increase in the newspaper’s circulation and continuous improvement in its presentation. After his passing, his son Gurmeet Singh took over the responsibility of editing and publishing Daily Suraj. Through dedication and hard work, he further strengthened the newspaper’s reputation as a fair and widely respected Punjabi daily.

Daily Suraj takes pride in being a platform that nurtured many well-known journalists. Several prominent names either began their careers with Suraj or contributed to it while working with leading media organizations. These include S. Suba Singh, former personal secretary to President Giani Zail Singh and author of History of Punjabi Journalism, along with Karam Singh Musafir, Jai Chand Kirti, renowned poet and journalist Ashwani Jaitley, Dr. Harkanwal Singh, S. S. Phul, Kirpal Singh Chauhan, and noted short story writer and journalist Balvir Jaswal.

The stature and recognition that Daily Suraj enjoys today are the result of the tireless efforts of its founder S. Harminder Singh Ahluwalia and the forward-thinking leadership of Gurmeet Singh. Today, it stands as a popular and trusted name among Punjabi readers.
