India Deploys Forensic and Tunnel Rescue Teams in Nepal After Devastating Floods

India has deployed forensic and tunnel rescue teams in Nepal to assist with rescue operations involving workers trapped inside hydropower project tunnels following the floods. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, a 19-member Indian forensic team has begun operations in Kathmandu. The forensic team will assist authorities in analysing DNA samples to help identify the bodies of people who died in the floods. The effort is aimed at supporting the identification process for flood victims. Meanwhile, an Indian tunnel rescue team has joined the Nepal Army’s search and rescue operations at the Chilime and Langtang hydropower projects. According to a CNN report, around 898 workers are currently trapped. The emergency follows sudden flooding in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on August 26. The floods have caused widespread devastation and significant loss of life. The disaster has so far claimed 788 lives in Nepal, while the death toll in Tibet has reached 16. Indian teams are supporting the ongoing rescue and relief operations, including efforts to reach workers trapped inside hydropower project tunnels and assist in identifying victims through forensic analysis.
