The Central Government on Wednesday expressed concerns over the upcoming username feature planned by WhatsApp, citing potential risks to digital security. According to high-level sources, the government is closely monitoring the issue and may issue a notice to the company if necessary. Sources said social media platforms must ensure that new features are not misused for impersonation, fraud, scams, or the spread of misinformation. They added that regulatory action could be considered if features such as usernames, edited messages, fake groups, or identity impersonation are used for unlawful or deceptive purposes. A senior official stated that social media companies have a responsibility to ensure their systems are not exploited to create confusion or facilitate malicious activities. The official added that if such misuse occurs, the government would take a well-considered but firm course of action. According to sources, the proposed username registration feature could pose digital security risks, as individuals may create usernames using someone else’s identity and misuse them. The concerned ministry is currently examining the issue and is expected to hold discussions with relevant departments. Officials said every legal aspect of the matter will be reviewed before any decision is taken. WhatsApp is expected to roll out the username feature later this year. The feature is designed to allow users to communicate with one another without sharing their phone numbers, offering an additional option for connecting on the messaging platform.
