US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday and formally conveyed an invitation from US President Donald Trump for the Indian Prime Minister to visit the United States. During the high-level meeting, both leaders held detailed discussions on several important issues, including defence cooperation, trade, energy, strategic technology, and collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region. The talks also covered the current situation in West Asia and the ongoing Iran crisis. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore, and US Under Secretary Allison Hooker were also present during the meeting. Marco Rubio’s visit to India comes just seven days after President Donald Trump’s visit to China. The timing of the visit has sparked significant discussion in the American media. According to several reports, Rubio’s India visit is being viewed not merely as a routine diplomatic engagement, but also as a “damage control mission.” A report by The New York Times stated that President Trump’s recent China visit has triggered fresh concerns in Asian geopolitics. During his Beijing visit, Trump openly praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling him a great leader and a close friend. Following those remarks, the United States is now seen as making efforts to maintain strategic balance in its relations with India. The meeting between the Indian and US leadership is being considered significant amid evolving geopolitical developments and growing strategic cooperation between the two countries.
