India registered a convincing five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the rain-affected opening ODI, with Virat Kohli scoring a match-winning 74 and the young pace attack delivering an impressive performance with the ball.
The victory came a day before Kohli's 38th birthday. The former India captain played an attacking 51-ball innings, hitting 13 boundaries and a six, as India chased the revised target of 143 runs in just 22.4 overs.
Earlier, India's young fast-bowling unit, led by the tall Gurnoor Brar, troubled the New Zealand batters with pace and bounce. Gurnoor, standing 6 feet 5 inches tall, combined effectively with Arshdeep Singh to bowl out the hosts for 185 in 40.2 overs.
In the absence of frontline pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, the Punjab duo of Arshdeep and Gurnoor stepped up with important contributions. Arshdeep claimed four wickets for 70 runs in his 10 overs, while Gurnoor returned figures of three for 44 in 9.2 overs.
Arshdeep maintained control through accurate line and length despite the challenges posed by the unusually short straight boundaries at the venue. Gurnoor's pace and bounce also put the New Zealand batting line-up under pressure.
Anshul Kamboj delivered another disciplined performance, taking two wickets for 22 runs in his 10-over spell. He bowled an impressive 46 dot balls, helping India keep the scoring under control during the middle overs.
India's bowling performance also justified head coach Gautam Gambhir's decision to back three relatively new players in the pace attack.
During the chase, India suffered an early setback when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck after facing six deliveries. Kohli then took charge and built a crucial partnership with captain Shubman Gill, who contributed 37 runs.
The pair added 113 runs for the second wicket, putting India firmly on course for victory. Kohli's 74 also marked his 80th half-century in One-Day International cricket.
India eventually reached the revised target in 22.4 overs, securing a five-wicket win and taking an early lead in the series.
