Women’s Cricket: India Reach Asian Games Semi-Finals With Clinical Performance Against Japan

Defending gold medalist India secured a place in the women’s cricket semi-finals at the Asian Games with a commanding eight-wicket victory over a young and inexperienced Japanese side on Friday. The win was powered by an outstanding all-round performance from opener Shafali Verma and a match-winning bowling spell from left-arm spinner Sri Charani.
 Charani returned impressive figures of 4 for 10, while Shafali contributed 2 for 13, as the Indian bowlers combined to dismantle Japan for just 57 runs. India then chased down the modest target in only five overs, booking a semi-final showdown against Bangladesh on September 20.
 After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, India never allowed the Japanese batters to settle. The Indian spin attack, led by Charani, maintained constant pressure and restricted scoring opportunities throughout the innings. Japan managed only three boundaries in their entire innings, highlighting the disciplined nature of India's bowling effort.
 The Indian bowlers dominated proceedings from the outset, preventing the hosts from playing freely and limiting them to one of their lowest totals of the tournament. Charani's accurate left-arm spin proved particularly effective, while Shafali made valuable contributions with the ball to further strengthen India's grip on the match.
 Chasing 58 for victory, India made a brisk start but Japan found a few moments of success by dismissing opener Gunalan Kamalini and number-one batter Bharati Fulmali. However, those breakthroughs provided little resistance against India's strong batting lineup.
 Shafali Verma remained unbeaten on 40 off 15 balls and led the chase with an aggressive innings. She was well supported by Richa Ghosh, who scored 12 runs from 6 deliveries, as the pair guided India comfortably to the target without any significant challenge.
 Although Japan could take pride in claiming two wickets while defending a very small total, their spirited effort was not enough to stop the Indian batters. Shafali and Ghosh ensured the chase was completed quickly and efficiently, underlining India's superiority in the contest.
 The emphatic victory keeps India's title defence firmly on track and sends the team into the semi-finals with strong momentum ahead of the crucial clash against Bangladesh.
