Team India Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar Gets One-Year Extension

Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of India national cricket team, has been granted a one-year extension to his tenure, which was originally set to conclude in June this year. The decision has been taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India with an eye on maintaining continuity in team selection ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. According to sources, the board has renewed Agarkar’s contract, effectively extending his term until June 2027. The move is aimed at ensuring stability in the selection process as preparations intensify for the upcoming global tournament. The ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held next year in October across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, and Agarkar’s tenure may continue through the event. However, the BCCI has not yet made an official announcement regarding the extension. As per a senior board official quoted by PTI, Agarkar himself did not request an extension. Since a selector can serve a maximum of four years, his contract has been renewed rather than simply extended. Sources further indicated that Agarkar has always preferred his performance to determine his future. During his tenure, the team has undergone a smooth transition, with a balanced mix of experienced and young players. Several bold selection decisions have also been made, helping shape a new direction for the side. Under Agarkar’s leadership as chief selector, Team India has delivered strong performances. Between October 2023 and March 2026, the team reached four ICC tournament finals, winning three of them. These include major titles such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Additionally, India also reached the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
