India continued their dominance in Asian men's hockey by defeating Japan 4-1 in the final to win the Asian Champions Trophy for the third consecutive time on Thursday. With this victory, the defending champions secured their sixth title in the tournament's history.
The Indian team, which has also won gold at the Asian Games, previously lifted the Asian Champions Trophy in 2011, 2016, 2018, 2023 and 2024. Their latest triumph further strengthened India's position as one of the leading teams in Asian hockey.
However, the final did not begin as expected for India, as Japan took an early lead in the third minute. Kazumasa Matsumoto scored a field goal with a tomahawk shot to put Japan ahead 1-0.
India responded by increasing the pressure and creating several attacking opportunities, although the team could not convert them into goals during the opening stages. Japan also earned two consecutive penalty corners in the 20th minute, but the Indian defence successfully prevented captain Raiki Fujishima from scoring.
India's vice-captain Hardik Singh played a crucial role in the midfield, completing his 200th international appearance during the final. He helped connect the defensive and attacking lines while contributing to several attacking moves. Germanpreet Singh also delivered a strong performance in defence.
India stepped up their attacking efforts after the half-time interval. The team earned its first penalty corner in the 33rd minute, but captain Harmanpreet Singh's flick was stopped by Japanese goalkeeper Kisho Kuroda. Japan earned another penalty corner in the 39th minute, but Shota Yamada failed to convert the opportunity.
The Indian team continued to put pressure on Japan's defence and earned two consecutive penalty corners in the 42nd minute. Shilanand Lakra capitalised on a rebound from a ball supplied by Aditya Arjun Lalage to score the equaliser, bringing the score to 1-1.
India took control of the contest in the final quarter. In the 48th minute, Dilpreet Singh scored through a reverse-hit following an impressive attacking move created by Hardik Singh, giving India a 2-1 advantage.
The Indian side extended its lead in the 53rd minute when Jugraj Singh successfully converted a penalty corner to make it 3-1. Just a minute later, Vivek Sagar Prasad added another goal to put the result beyond doubt.
Lakra's initial attempt was blocked by the Japanese goalkeeper, but the rebound reached Vivek Sagar Prasad. He unleashed a powerful shot from the top of the circle to increase India's lead to 4-1.
Japan earned its fourth penalty corner just 12 seconds before the final whistle. However, captain Fujishima's attempt went wide, ending Japan's hopes of a late comeback.
India had also defeated Japan by the same 4-1 margin during the league stage of the tournament at the Olympian Surjit Singh Stadium in Jalandhar.
Despite facing a challenging start in the final, the Indian team produced a commanding second-half performance to secure the title. India completed the tournament as unbeaten champions, adding another memorable achievement to their hockey record.
