The week-long standoff between the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the Punjab government came to a resolution on Monday, September 7, after farmer leaders accepted a formal consent letter sent by the state administration. Following the agreement, the seven-day pakka morcha at the Chandigarh-Mohali border is being called off, with thousands of farmers beginning their journey home. Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian is scheduled to visit the main protest stage to formally announce the government's acceptance of the farmers' key demands. The decision was finalized after SKM union leaders held a strategy meeting at a hotel in Mohali's Phase 11 before heading to the gathering site.The breakthrough follows high-level negotiations held on Sunday night at Punjab Bhawan between farm union delegates and a ministerial delegation led by Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian and Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh. During the talks, the Punjab government agreed to convene a special session of the State Legislative Assembly to pass a resolution annulling specific clauses of past river water agreements. In addition to water rights, the administration agreed to address several other key policy matters. These include opposition to the Electricity Amendment Bill and the Seed Bill, an increase in sugarcane prices, and the implementation of a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme for agricultural debt waivers.
