The Indian cricket team is set to make history once again as it prepares to play its record 15th final in an ICC tournament. The team will take the field on March 8 with the aim of securing its eighth ICC title. India’s journey in ICC finals began with its historic victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, when the team led by Kapil Dev defeated the West Indies national cricket team by 43 runs at Lord's Cricket Ground on June 25, 1983. Over the years, India has played several memorable ICC finals, experiencing both victories and defeats. In 2000, the team lost the ICC KnockOut (Champions Trophy) final to the New Zealand national cricket team by four wickets in Nairobi. In the 2002 Champions Trophy final in Colombo, persistent rain prevented the match from being completed over two days, and both teams were declared joint winners. In the 2003 ODI World Cup final in Johannesburg, the Australia national cricket team defeated India by 125 runs. However, India bounced back in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup final in 2007, where it beat the Pakistan national cricket team by five runs in Johannesburg. A major milestone came in 2011 when India defeated the Sri Lanka national cricket team by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to win the ODI World Cup after 28 years. In the 2013 Champions Trophy final in Birmingham, a rain-shortened match reduced to 20 overs saw India score 129/7 and restrict England national cricket team to 124/8 in the final over to claim the title. India later faced several setbacks in ICC finals. The team lost the 2014 T20 World Cup final in Dhaka to Sri Lanka by six wickets. In the 2017 Champions Trophy final at The Oval, Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs after posting 338/4, with India being bowled out for 158. Further defeats followed in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship final in Southampton, where New Zealand won by eight wickets after India scored 217 and 170. In the 2023 WTC final at The Oval, Australia secured a 209-run victory, with Travis Head scoring 163 in the first innings as Australia posted 469. India managed only 296 and 234 in response. India also finished runner-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, where Australia chased down the target with six wickets in hand, powered by Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58*). The team returned to winning ways in the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Bridgetown, defeating the South Africa national cricket team by seven runs to win the title for the second time in 17 years. India also triumphed in the 2025 Champions Trophy final in Dubai, beating New Zealand by four wickets. Key contributions came from Rohit Sharma (76), Shreyas Iyer (48), and Shubman Gill (31), while KL Rahul (34*) and Ravindra Jadeja (9*) guided India to victory in the 49th over. Now, India has reached the T20 World Cup 2026 final, marking the 15th ICC final appearance in its history. Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the team will face New Zealand on March 8 with the aim of lifting another ICC trophy. Australia remains the most successful team in ICC tournaments, having won 10 ICC titles—including six ODI World Cups (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, 2023), one T20 World Cup (2021), two Champions Trophies (2006, 2009), and one World Test Championship (2023). India currently ranks second with seven ICC titles, including two ODI World Cups (1983, 2011), two T20 World Cups (2007, 2024), and three Champions Trophy titles (2002 shared, 2013, 2025).
