CBSA Seizes $13.8 Million in Illegal Tobacco and Nicotine at Ontario Border

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported a significant crackdown on contraband in August, seizing more than $13.8 million worth of illegal tobacco and nicotine products at southern Ontario border crossings. Officials stated that most of the seizures involved large commercial shipments entering Canada from the United States. The CBSA emphasized that these operations prevented illicit tobacco and nicotine products from reaching Canadian markets, noting that profits from such trade often fuel other organized criminal activities. On August 20, officers intercepted 14,964 kilograms of loose tobacco at the Blue Water Bridge, valued at approximately $2.76 million. Just days earlier, on August 14, another 15,222 kilograms of loose tobacco worth about $2.81 million was seized at the same location. At the Ambassador Bridge on August 17, authorities confiscated 1.78 million cigarettes, valued at $333,189. Additionally, on August 11, CBSA officers seized 2,796 kilograms of nicotine pouches at the Blue Water Bridge, with an estimated value of $2.98 million. Other seizures included 3,000 kilograms of hookah tobacco at the Peace Bridge and 7,658 kilograms of tobacco and nicotine products at the Queenston Bridge. Since January 1, 2026, CBSA has confiscated more than $52.2 million worth of illegal tobacco and nicotine products in the southern Ontario region, underscoring the scale of smuggling operations and the agency’s ongoing enforcement efforts.
