Advocate Dhami Urges United Sikh Voice on Legislation Protecting Sri Guru Granth Sahib

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called a gathering of all Sikh organizations on April 6 at Teja Singh Samundri Hall, SGPC headquarters in Amritsar, to discuss the proposed law on preventing acts of blasphemy. SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami announced the meeting today after a consultation with SGPC members. He emphasized that this is a highly sensitive issue and requires a shared panthic opinion. The gathering will include representatives from various Sikh bodies, including Nihang Sikh groups, Damdami Taksal, Sikh institutions, scholars, judges, lawyers, missionary colleges, Singh Sabhas, federations, and heads of different Sikh communities such as Nirmale, Udasi, Seva Panthi, and Karsevaks. Advocate Dhami highlighted that the Punjab government has not clearly defined the framework for a strict law to prevent blasphemy. He stressed the distinction between ordinary religious texts and the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, noting that the sanctity, reverence, and recognition of Sri Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru is of utmost importance. The SGPC has therefore called for this panthic assembly to form a consensus on the measures required to protect the sacred scripture, reflecting a unified Sikh viewpoint.
