Patiala Driver’s Mother Defeats Cancer with Support from Government Health Scheme

In a remarkable story of resilience and timely support, a 65-year-old woman from Patiala has successfully battled cancer, thanks to financial assistance provided under a government health scheme. The case highlights the critical role of accessible healthcare in saving lives during times of crisis. Gurpinder Jeet Singh, a driver from Patiala, faced a major personal challenge nearly five months ago when his mother, Baljeet Kaur, began showing signs of serious illness. Her condition gradually worsened, and she eventually stopped eating and drinking. Initial consultations with private doctors were followed by a referral to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. Despite treatment and tests, her health continued to decline. A medical report later confirmed that she was suffering from uterine cancer. For Gurpinder, this diagnosis brought immense emotional and financial pressure. Without delay, he shifted his mother to Tata Cancer Hospital in Sangrur for further treatment. However, the expenses quickly mounted, with over ₹60,000 spent at the initial stage alone—an overwhelming burden for someone with a limited income. At this critical juncture, Gurpinder learned about the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme at the hospital. He promptly completed the registration process, and within a short time, he received confirmation along with a smart card. This marked a turning point, as the scheme covered the majority of the treatment costs. The treatment included multiple high-cost procedures such as diagnostic tests, repeated chemotherapy sessions, medicines, surgery, ICU care, ventilator support, and hospitalization. In total, expenses exceeding ₹8 lakh were covered under the scheme, significantly easing the financial strain on the family. Doctors described the case as highly challenging, as the cancer had spread from the uterus to the liver and lungs. Initially, three rounds of chemotherapy were administered, but due to side effects and the patient’s weakened condition, the dosage was adjusted. Subsequently, nine additional chemotherapy sessions were conducted at reduced intensity. Following the treatment, the tumor reduced to a localized area, enabling doctors to perform a complex surgery that lasted approximately eight hours. The operation involved 35 to 40 stitches, and the patient remained in the ICU on ventilator support for two to three days before being shifted to a general ward. Gurpinder remained by his mother’s side throughout the treatment, providing constant care and support. After eight days in the hospital, her condition began to improve, bringing relief to the family. The treatment journey, which began on November 24, 2025, is still ongoing, with follow-up visits scheduled at a hospital in Mullanpur. According to hospital sources, the total cost of the surgery and associated treatment at Tata Memorial facilities was estimated between ₹8 to ₹10 lakh. While Gurpinder had to bear the cost of a few medicines not available at the hospital, the majority of expenses were covered under the scheme. For Gurpinder, a father of two, the support has been life-changing. He expressed relief that his mother received timely treatment despite financial constraints. The case not only reflects a son’s determination and love but also underscores the importance of government-backed healthcare initiatives in ensuring that financial hardship does not stand in the way of life-saving treatment.
