09 Oct, 2026 03:23 PM

South African jurist Navanetham “Navi” Pillay has been announced as the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee selected her for her significant contribution to strengthening the international legal system and advancing accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Pillay’s career has been marked by a longstanding commitment to human rights, justice and the rule of law. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, she grew up during the apartheid era, when racial discrimination and segregation shaped the lives of millions. After becoming a lawyer, she defended Nelson Mandela and other people who challenged the apartheid system.
Navi Pillay’s Key Roles in International Justice
Pillay has held several important positions in the international judicial system. Her career includes serving as a judge on South Africa’s High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court.
She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In addition, she chaired the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry concerning the occupied Palestinian territory.
According to the Nobel Committee, Pillay has made a substantial contribution to expanding the reach and effectiveness of international law. Her work has helped strengthen the principle that those responsible for serious international crimes must face legal accountability.
Landmark Contribution to Cases Involving Sexual Violence and Genocide
Pillay’s judicial work in cases related to the Rwandan genocide is regarded as particularly significant. Her contribution helped establish that rape and sexual violence, under certain circumstances, can constitute acts of genocide as well as crimes against humanity.
The proceedings also contributed to the development of international criminal law concerning incitement to genocide. Cases involving the alleged use of propaganda to encourage genocide helped clarify the legal consequences of such conduct.
These developments marked important steps in the pursuit of justice for victims of mass atrocities and in strengthening international legal standards.
International Law as the Foundation for Lasting Peace
In its statement, the Nobel Committee emphasised that international law is essential to global peace and security, particularly at a time when wars and conflicts continue to pose serious challenges.
The committee expressed concern about growing pressure on international institutions and the rule of law, as well as situations in which powerful countries evade accountability.
It stressed that lasting peace should rest on legal principles, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes rather than simply on the wishes of powerful nations or the balance of power.
Throughout her career, Pillay has highlighted the responsibility of both individuals and states to respect the rule of law.
The Nobel Committee described her professional journey as an example of commitment to justice, human dignity and international law. Her work, it said, offers hope and inspiration to those striving to build a more peaceful world.
