India Strongly Objects to US Decision on PERM Programme, Says Skilled Talent Benefits Both Countries
India on Friday strongly objected to the United States’ decision concerning the Permanent Labour Certification Programme (PERM), which affects several major information technology companies, including Indian firms.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the movement of skilled professionals benefits the economies of both countries by creating opportunities for Indians and enabling American companies to access highly specialised talent. According to the ministry, this exchange supports innovation, research, productivity, competitiveness and job creation, while also contributing to shareholder wealth in the United States.
The ministry said it was aware of the US Department of Labor’s decision regarding the PERM programme for certain companies. It added that the measures announced by Washington did not support the shared aspirations of India and the United States.
India Objects to JD Vance’s Remarks
India also expressed strong displeasure over comments made by US Vice President JD Vance concerning the Permanent Labour Certification Programme.
The Ministry of External Affairs described the language used in the remarks as inappropriate, saying it overlooked the qualifications and expertise of Indian professionals working in the United States.
The ministry emphasised that Indian professionals are highly educated and skilled, and play an important role in strengthening the American economy and advancing innovation.
Ministry Highlights Contributions of Immigrants
The ministry also pointed to the historical contribution of immigrants to the development of the United States. It said generations of immigrants had helped shape the country through their work, entrepreneurship and innovation, contributing to its growth and prosperity.
It further stated that the use of such language was deeply insulting, as it brought back memories of painful historical experiences and the colonial legacy.
India’s response comes amid the US action involving the PERM programme for several technology companies. New Delhi maintains that the movement of skilled professionals supports economic growth and creates benefits for both countries.
