A 27-year-old man died after firecrackers stored on the top floor of a building caught fire in Field Gunj, one of the narrowest localities in Ludhiana, on Friday afternoon.

The incident triggered a series of loud explosions as the firecrackers began bursting. The flames quickly spread, turning the incident into a major fire emergency.

According to information, the building belongs to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Goldy Sabharwal. A clothing shop operates on the ground floor, while the top floor has a kitchen, a room and a stock of firecrackers.

The firecracker explosions reportedly caused a wall to collapse. Sahil Sabharwal, 27, who was trapped at the spot, died after being buried under the debris. He was the cousin of the AAP leader.

Local residents claimed that firecrackers had been stored in the building. However, Goldy Sabharwal said the firecrackers were left over from the previous year and had caught fire accidentally.

After receiving information about the incident, fire brigade vehicles and a police team from Division No. 2 police station rushed to the spot.

The narrow lanes in the area made it difficult for firefighters to reach the building and carry out firefighting and rescue operations.

Ludhiana's constituency MLA Ashok Parashar Pappi also reached the site after learning about the incident.

Police and fire brigade teams continued their firefighting and rescue operations at the time of reporting.
