Haryana Police Uses Facial Recognition Technology to Track Criminals; Uploads 29,416 Photos
The Haryana Police is strengthening its use of facial recognition technology to identify and track criminals across the state. So far, photographs of 29,416 active criminals have been uploaded to the department's Facial Recognition System (FRS) as part of an ongoing statewide exercise to create and update a digital criminal database.
According to police officials, physical verification of 47,124 active criminals has been completed across Haryana till October 29. As many as 11 districts have achieved 100 per cent verification of their active criminal records.
During a review meeting held at the Police Headquarters in Panchkula on Thursday, Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Singhal directed districts that have completed the verification process to upload the details and photographs of proclaimed offenders (POs), bail jumpers and most-wanted criminals to the system.
He instructed the concerned officers to complete the remaining work within the next two weeks. The DGP emphasised that maintaining an updated digital database would help the police identify criminals more efficiently and keep track of their activities.
During the meeting, IGP (Law and Order) Rakesh Arya informed officials that physical verification of 47,124 active criminals had been completed, while photographs of 29,416 individuals had been uploaded to the Facial Recognition System.
The meeting also reviewed the status of CCTV surveillance across the state. Singhal directed officers to ensure that all cameras installed at 389 police stations and 327 police posts remain operational. A total of 6,644 CCTV cameras have been installed under the project.
Night nakabandi arrangements were also reviewed. Apart from 250 permanent checking points, the police have identified 288 additional locations for checking during night patrols.
The Haryana Police has also been conducting a special drive against vehicles operating without number plates and High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) since June 1. According to the data available till October 28, police teams checked 31.22 lakh vehicles during the drive. This resulted in 2.72 lakh challans being issued and 22,269 vehicles being impounded.
Singhal further directed officers to reduce the response time of Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs), stressing that timely police assistance during emergencies is essential for ensuring public safety.
