Punjabi singer Mika Singh has come out in support of his elder brother, veteran singer Daler Mehndi, rejecting allegations that he lip-synced during a stage performance and performed after consuming alcohol. Mika described the accusations as disappointing and urged media organisations to verify facts before publishing reports that could damage an artist’s reputation.
In a video message shared on Instagram, Mika revealed that Daler Mehndi has been facing health problems for the past two years and recently underwent major surgery. Despite these difficulties, he continues to perform on stage for his fans.
Mika firmly denied that his brother consumes alcohol, calling the allegations baseless. He expressed disappointment over the incident, particularly because the accusations were made publicly by a minister during a live event.
“I know my brother Daler Mehndi very well. He does not drink alcohol. It was extremely disappointing to see a responsible minister come on stage and make such allegations,” Mika said.
He also questioned why Daler Mehndi was singled out over the use of backing tracks, pointing out that many artists perform with such musical support. Referring to international band Coldplay, Mika asked whether anyone would dare to behave similarly towards a globally recognised act on stage.
How the Controversy Began
The controversy followed remarks by Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal, who represents the Narendra Nagar Assembly constituency. During the ‘Maa Kunjapuri Mela’ in Tehri Garhwal, Uniyal questioned Daler Mehndi’s performance.
The minister alleged that the singer appeared unsteady on stage and was lip-syncing despite reportedly charging Rs 35 lakh for the performance.
A video showing Uniyal confronting the singer on stage subsequently went viral on social media, drawing attention to the incident.
Mika Singh has now defended his brother and called on the media to exercise caution and establish the facts before circulating allegations that could affect an artist’s public image.
