ECI Launches 24 New Initiatives to Strengthen Election Transparency and Efficiency

New Delhi : The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched 24 new initiatives between February 19 and June 18, 2025, aimed at strengthening electoral transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency in election management.
These reforms span voter facilitation, technology upgrades, legal preparedness, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Voter-Centric Reforms:
- Maximum voters per polling station capped at 1200 to ease congestion.
- Additional polling booths to be set up in high-rise buildings and residential colonies.
- Mobile phone deposit facilities to be provided outside polling stations for voter convenience.
- Voter Information Slips redesigned to highlight serial and part numbers prominently.
Enhanced Electoral Roll Management:
- Death registration data to be obtained from RGI database for accurate voter roll updates.
- New mechanism for Unique EPIC numbers to resolve issues of duplicate voter IDs.
Boost to Stakeholder Engagement:
- 4,719 all-party meetings conducted at CEO, DEO, and ERO levels, with over 28,000 political representatives participating.
- Consultations held with major parties including AAP, BJP, BSP, CPI(M), and NPP.
- Capacity-building programs for Booth Level Agents and Supervisors held at IIIDEM across Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and New Delhi.
- Training of over 4,800 BLO Supervisors completed, with plans to train 1 lakh more in coming years.
Legal and Administrative Strengthening:
- National Conference of Counsels held to align legal strategy between ECI and CEOs.
- Training modules being developed for 28 identified stakeholder groups based on the RPA Act and ECI regulations.
- BLOs to receive standardised photo ID cards for easier verification.
Technology & Transparency Initiatives:
- Launch of ECINET Integrated Dashboard, a single platform replacing 40+ apps and websites.
- Biometric attendance and e-office system implemented for better administrative efficiency.
- 100% Webcasting at all polling stations to ensure transparent monitoring of poll day activities.
- Digitisation of Voter Turnout Reports (VTR), index cards, and statistics for faster data dissemination.
Firsts and Forward-Looking Measures:
- Summary Revision of Rolls (SSR) conducted ahead of by-elections—a first in nearly 20 years.
- Relaxation of distance norms for campaign booths—now allowed beyond 100m instead of 200m from polling stations.
- Orientation programs for media and police officers to enhance inter-agency coordination during polls.
