Amid ongoing farmer protests over inadequate electricity supply for paddy irrigation, the Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant (GHTP) at Lehra Mohabbat has restarted three of its four units, raising its generation capacity to nearly 620 megawatts. Farmers had been staging demonstrations for over a week, complaining that they were receiving only three to four hours of electricity daily to run tube wells, making it difficult to meet irrigation needs for paddy crops. The protests highlighted the growing demand for uninterrupted power supply during the peak agricultural season. The thermal plant, with a total capacity of 920 megawatts, had been operating with only one active unit while the other three remained shut for nearly three weeks. On Friday, the third unit was brought back online, significantly improving output and easing pressure on the state’s power grid. Sources at the plant revealed that disruptions were largely due to strikes by outsourced workers. These employees, hired through contractors, have been demanding direct employment under Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) instead of contractual arrangements. With three units now operational, authorities expect some relief in electricity supply across the region. Efforts are underway to restore the fourth unit, which would bring the plant closer to full capacity and further stabilize the state’s power distribution system.
