In a significant development in the death case of bodybuilder Varinder Ghuman, the Amritsar Police have registered an FIR against four doctors. The case has been filed under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on charges of negligence against doctors associated with Fortis Escorts Hospital. The FIR names orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tapish Shukla, consultant anesthetist Dr. Alka Tiwari, head of the anesthesia department Dr. Rajinder Kaur, and cardiology consultant Dr. Arun Kumar Chopra. It is pertinent to note that Varinder Ghuman passed away on October 9, 2025, during a surgical procedure in Amritsar. Following his death, the family had accused the hospital administration of medical negligence. Family members had also raised concerns over the condition of the body after the operation, stating that the upper part of the body, from the head to the shoulders, had turned black and blue, which they described as suspicious. An SIT constituted by the Amritsar district administration, comprising expert doctors, had been investigating the case. The SIT submitted its report last month, clearly stating that Ghuman’s death occurred due to negligence by doctors during the surgery. The report further highlighted that standard medical protocols were not followed during the procedure.
