‘Dandiya Over, Clothes Back’: Viral Video Raises Questions About Return Policy Abuse

A viral video showing a large pile of returned parcels after the Navratri and Dandiya season has sparked a debate on social media over the possible misuse of online shopping return policies.
The video has drawn attention to concerns that some customers may be purchasing clothes and accessories specifically for festive events and returning them after the celebrations end. However, the actual reasons behind the returns shown in the video have not been independently verified.
What Does the Viral Video Show?
The video was shared on X by user Nishant Chant. It shows a large number of parcels piled up outside a residential complex. Packages bearing shipping labels and barcodes can be seen scattered near and beneath the building's shutter.
In the footage, the person recording the video opens a large pink bag filled with more parcels. White sacks containing returned items are also visible, highlighting the volume of packages collected at the location.
The large number of parcels has led to speculation online that some customers may have ordered expensive outfits and accessories for Navratri and Dandiya celebrations before returning them once the events were over. However, the footage alone does not establish whether the parcels were returned for this reason.
Social Media Users Divided Over Return Policies
The video was shared with the caption, “Dandiya over... dress return. Shameless generation.” It quickly triggered a wider discussion about consumer behaviour and the use of return and refund facilities offered by e-commerce platforms.
Several users criticised the practice, arguing that returning clothes after wearing them for a specific occasion could create problems for online sellers and small businesses.
One user referred to having heard advice that expensive clothing could be returned after an event if the buyer felt it was too costly. Another expressed concern that such behaviour could prompt companies to introduce stricter return policies, making the process more difficult for genuine customers.
Some users also argued that repeated or inappropriate returns could cause financial losses for online sellers, particularly small businesses that may have limited resources to absorb such costs.
Others Defend Customers’ Right to Return Products
Not everyone agreed with the criticism. Some social media users argued that customers have the right to request an exchange or refund when companies explicitly offer such options under their return policies.
The debate has highlighted differing views on consumer rights and responsible shopping practices. While some users believe that returning outfits after festival events amounts to misuse of e-commerce facilities, others maintain that customers should be allowed to use the return options provided by sellers, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.
The viral footage has therefore brought renewed attention to how online shopping return policies are used and whether stricter safeguards are needed to protect both consumers and businesses.
