Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann launched a sharp political attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its proposed 'Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra' scheduled to begin on September 18. Addressing a joint press conference in Chandigarh alongside Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the Chief Minister remarked that those responsible for supplying drugs into the region are now pretending to march against the drug menace. Elaborating on the state's geographical vulnerabilities, Mann pointed out that Punjab shares a 533-kilometer international border, making it a target for cross-border smuggling of illegal arms and narcotics, which state law enforcement agencies routinely intercept. He urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to focus on drug enforcement in his home state of Gujarat, specifically citing massive seizures of 2,000 to 3,000 kilograms of illicit substances at Mundra Port. He further noted that Punjab Police have acted on intelligence to recover significant quantities of narcotics from other states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. The Chief Minister accused the central government of attempting to malign Punjab’s reputation over the drug issue while ignoring major entry points elsewhere in the country. Criticizing the BJP's rhetoric, Mann asserted that the public in Punjab is perceptive enough to recognize political maneuvering and will not be misled by such campaigns. He added that out of all contraband seized in drug trafficking cases across the nation, Punjab Police alone accounts for 60 percent of the total recoveries.Reaffirming his administration's commitment to law and order, Mann emphasized that the state police force is taking stringent measures against both narcotics networks and organized crime syndicates. In addition to dismantling local operations, law enforcement is working to extradite and apprehend foreign-based gangsters attempting to disrupt peace within the state. He reiterated that no anti-social elements will be spared under any circumstances.
