Norway Government to Enforce Age Verification, Limit Social Media for Minors
The Norway government has announced a landmark decision to introduce legislation that would impose a complete ban on social media use for children under the age of 16. The proposed law will make it mandatory for technology companies to implement strict age verification systems on their platforms. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in an official statement that the move is aimed at safeguarding childhood experiences. “We are introducing this law because we want a childhood where children can truly be children. Play, friendships, and everyday life should not be taken over by algorithms and screens,” he stated. He further emphasized that ensuring a safe digital environment for children is a critical priority. The minority government, led by the Labour Party, has clarified that the bill will be presented in Parliament by the end of 2026. The proposal is being seen as one of the strictest measures globally to address the negative impact of social media on children’s mental health. Experts believe such regulations could play a significant role in reducing digital exposure and promoting healthier developmental environments for young users.
