A canal breach near Chattiwind village on Tarn Taran Road in Amritsar led to flooding in nearby residential areas and roads on Saturday. Local authorities rushed to the site and initiated relief operations to contain the situation.
According to officials, the breach occurred while pipes were being laid under the canal through boring work. The sudden break caused water to flow rapidly into populated areas. Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar, AAP MLA from Amritsar South, inspected the site and confirmed that the water level in the canal was reduced from the rear to control the flow and facilitate repair work.
Teams from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), along with the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), and local volunteers, joined the relief efforts. Workers used soil-filled bags and nets to plug the breach and prevent further damage.
Parliamentarian Gurjeet Singh Aujla also visited the affected area to review the situation. Officials stated that timely intervention helped avert major losses, though waterlogging disrupted daily life in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Residents expressed concern over the incident, recalling similar past breaches that had caused significant inconvenience. Authorities assured that repair work is being expedited to restore normalcy.
