Jamia Millia Islamia Forms Seven-Member Panel to Hold Talks with Protesting Students
Amid ongoing student protests and a hunger strike at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), the university administration has formed a seven-member high-level committee to engage with the demonstrators, hear their demands and help restore a peaceful atmosphere on campus.
The committee was constituted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif and includes senior faculty members and university officials, among them five deans. The move comes as students continue to press the administration to address their demands.
According to an official notification, the committee includes Professor Iqtidar Mohammad Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Languages; Professor Luqman Ahmad Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences; Professor Zuber Meenai, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Professor Nilofer Afzal, Dean of Students’ Welfare; and Professor Tanuja, Dean of Academic Affairs.
The other two members are Professor Mini S Thomas from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Professor Seemi Malhotra from the Department of English.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of senior university officials on Sunday, where the demands of students participating in the sit-in protest and hunger strike were discussed in detail.
The meeting was attended by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mazhar Asif, Registrar Professor Mohammad Mehtab Alam Rizvi, deans of various faculties, the Dean of Students’ Welfare, the Chief Proctor, the hostel provost and other administrative officials.
Following the discussions, the administration decided to establish the panel to initiate dialogue with the protesting students, examine their grievances and take necessary steps to resolve the ongoing deadlock.
The committee’s formation marks an effort by the university administration to address the campus unrest through discussions with students. However, the administration has not announced a deadline for the panel to submit its recommendations.
The university said the committee’s primary objective is to find solutions to students’ concerns, restore peace on campus and bring the academic environment back to normal.
