‘It’s the Era of Reels, But Shortcuts Can Harm’: PM Modi’s Message to Youth

12 Aug, 2026 10:56 AM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday advised the younger generation to avoid taking shortcuts in life, saying that an easy or hurried approach to challenges can ultimately prove harmful. Speaking at the launch of former President Ram Nath Kovind’s autobiography, Modi referred to the growing popularity of short-form videos and social media influencers. He said that while the present era is dominated by “Reels”, young people should not allow the attraction of shortcuts to influence the way they approach life and its challenges. Using the example of railway safety warnings, the Prime Minister said that people who try to save time by crossing railway tracks instead of using a footbridge can put themselves at risk. He used the phrase “shortcut will cut you short” to underline his message that the wrong shortcuts can have damaging consequences. Modi said the goal of building a developed India would be achieved through the hard work of young people who do not become discouraged by difficulties, but instead confront challenges and rise above them. To reinforce his message, the Prime Minister referred to Ram Nath Kovind’s personal journey. He described the former President as an example of how courage and determination can help a person overcome hardships and prevent life’s challenges from becoming overwhelming. Kovind lost his mother at a very young age, while his father raised him. Modi noted that despite reaching the country’s highest constitutional office, Kovind continues to regard his father as his hero. The Prime Minister also highlighted Kovind’s humility. Recalling his meetings with the former President at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Modi said Kovind would often personally accompany him to his car despite protocol. Although Modi would ask him not to do so, Kovind, he said, never gave up his humility. Modi emphasised that a person should become increasingly humble as they rise higher in life. The Prime Minister released Ram Nath Kovind’s autobiography, “Triumph of the Indian Republic: My Life, My Struggles.” He said the book provides a detailed account of the former President’s inspirational life and his efforts to serve society.
