Delhi Police Explains Hospitalisation of Sonam Wangchuk Following High Court Orders

Delhi Police has issued an official statement after social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, was shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital on Saturday morning. According to the statement shared by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) on social media platform X, Wangchuk was moved to the hospital after his health deteriorated. The police said the decision was taken in compliance with the directions of the Delhi High Court, which had ordered that he receive necessary medical care if required. Delhi Police further stated that while the hospital transfer was being carried out, some protesters attempted to obstruct the process, resulting in a brief commotion. However, officials said the situation remained under control and the operation was completed safely. The police also appealed to protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to vacate the area peacefully at the earliest. It may be recalled that on Thursday, the Delhi High Court directed the Central Government and the Delhi Government to ensure Sonam Wangchuk undergoes daily medical examinations and receives treatment whenever necessary. The police said the hospitalisation followed these judicial directions. Earlier, Abhijit Deepke, founder-president of the Cockroach Janata Party, had alleged that Sonam Wangchuk, who was observing the hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, had come under attack after an object was thrown at him. He claimed that Wangchuk escaped without any injuries and alleged that the government wanted to bring the protest to an end. Sonam Wangchuk has now been on a hunger strike for 20 days. A team of doctors has been continuously monitoring his health. According to medical officials, his body weight has been steadily declining due to prolonged fasting.
