Runway Closure for 8 Hours Daily at Amritsar Airport Till September 27

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced a temporary change in flight schedules at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport due to ongoing runway and infrastructure upgrade work during the summer season. According to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the authority, runway renovation work will be carried out from April 1 to September 27, 2026. As per the revised schedule, the runway will remain closed daily from 1:45 pm to 9:45 pm. During this eight-hour window, no flights will be able to land or take off from the airport. All airlines have adjusted their schedules in accordance with the notice. The runway will resume operations after 9:45 pm each day. Airport Director Bhupinder Singh stated that recarpeting of the 3,658-metre-long runway is essential to ensure the safe operation of larger aircraft. In addition to the runway work, several key upgrades will also be undertaken. These include the upgradation of the Runway End Safety Area (RESA) at both ends of the runway in line with international standards. More than 2,000 old lights at the airport will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lights, strengthening the Category-III (CAT-III) system and enabling smoother landings even in dense fog conditions. Furthermore, a new Integrated Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ILCMS) will be installed. This system will allow real-time monitoring of airport lighting from the control room and help detect faults quickly, improving operational efficiency. At present, the airport operates a total of 62 flights, including 40 domestic and 22 international services. Amritsar is directly connected to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, as well as international destinations including Doha, Dubai, Singapore, London (Gatwick), and Birmingham. The Airports Authority of India has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers and has advised them to check updated flight timings with their respective airlines before heading to the airport. Officials stated that these upgrades are aimed at making air travel safer and more efficient in the long term.
