Jantar Mantar De-notified as Designated Protest Site; Delhi Police Announce Three New Locations

12 Oct, 2026 02:11 PM

In a major administrative decision concerning public demonstrations in the national capital, Delhi Police have removed Jantar Mantar from the official list of designated protest sites. Under new directives, public agitations, rallies, and sit-ins will now be hosted at three newly designated venues: Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and the CBD Ground in East Delhi. According to an official order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had previously constituted a high-level committee to identify alternative venues for public protests in place of the current location. The decision to de-notify Jantar Mantar and select the three new grounds was taken based on the recommendations submitted by this panel. Delhi Police stated that comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and detailed regulatory guidelines governing demonstrations at these new venues will be issued separately. Jantar Mantar had served as the focal point for public agitations in the capital for over three decades. It gained prominence in 1993 after demonstrations were prohibited at the Boat Club near India Gate following the historic 1988 farmers' movement led by Mahendra Singh Tikait. This is not the first attempt to alter the venue for public protests in the capital. In October 2017, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned sit-in protests at Jantar Mantar and ordered them to be shifted to Ramlila Maidan. However, in July 2018, the Supreme Court set aside the total ban, permitting peaceful and regulated demonstrations at the site. Ramlila Maidan, one of the newly designated alternatives, holds rich political significance, having hosted landmark historic gatherings ranging from Jayaprakash Narayan’s 1975 movement against the Indira Gandhi government to Anna Hazare's anti-corruption crusade in 2011.
