Chetan Singh Jouramajra Sends Signed Resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker

03 Nov, 2026 05:27 PM

Chetan Singh Jouramajra, MLA from Samana, has resigned from his membership of the Punjab Legislative Assembly after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Jouramajra had emailed his resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Monday. On Tuesday, he sent another copy of the resignation letter bearing his signatures to the Speaker.

The development comes after the Speaker issued a notice to Jouramajra on Monday, seeking his response. A hearing in the matter has been scheduled for November 5. However, the Samana MLA submitted his resignation before the scheduled hearing.

Earlier, AAP Chief Whip Baljinder Kaur had filed a petition before the Assembly Speaker, seeking Jouramajra's disqualification from the Punjab Legislative Assembly under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Among the three AAP MLAs who joined the BJP, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh had already resigned from their Assembly membership.

With Jouramajra's resignation, the legal basis of the AAP's disqualification petition against him has now come into question.

Following the vacancies in the Amritsar North and Sanaur constituencies, the Samana Assembly seat could also be officially declared vacant at any time.
