In a dramatic rescue operation, two workers trapped inside a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project were pulled out alive nine days after devastating floods struck Nepal’s Trishuli River corridor. The incident has renewed hope that more survivors may still be found. The sudden floods on August 26 swept through the Trishuli Valley, destroying infrastructure and damaging dozens of hydropower projects. Rescue teams intensified their efforts after hearing voices inside the tunnel, eventually establishing contact with those trapped. On Friday, 30-year-old foreman Sanjay Sah from Saptari district was rescued first, followed by 45-year-old supervisor Kabir Maharjan from Kathmandu. Both men were airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment. Officials confirmed that the Nepal Army and Armed Police Force, supported by Chinese experts, deployed heavy equipment including excavators, compressors, and breakers to clear access to the tunnel. Blasting was carried out to remove large rock obstructions, enabling rescuers to reach the trapped workers. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the floods claimed at least 1,252 lives, while 5,053 people remain missing as of Thursday evening. The disaster severely damaged the 60-megawatt Upper Trishuli 3A project and disrupted major road links in the region. Local media reported that rescuers continuously encouraged the trapped workers not to panic, assuring them that efforts were underway. Their eventual rescue has been hailed as a miracle amid the widespread devastation. The Independent Power Producers’ Association of Nepal stated that 945 workers across 11 hydropower projects remain out of contact following the floods. Search and rescue operations continue under challenging conditions, with authorities racing against time to locate survivors.
