A video purportedly showing a young woman in a suspected intoxicated state at Bathinda’s grain market has gone viral on social media, prompting police intervention. The woman was subsequently admitted to a government-run de-addiction centre for treatment.
The 18-second video shows the woman apparently struggling to maintain her balance and falling down. Following the circulation of the video, police took action and arranged for her treatment at the government de-addiction centre.
Kotwali police station SHO Yadvinder Singh said the woman is a resident of the Jaito area of Faridkot district. According to the police, she was admitted to the government de-addiction centre on Thursday. Sources said her mother has also reached the hospital. Police are still trying to determine how and why the woman reached Bathinda.
The incident has also triggered a political reaction. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal shared the video on his X account and targeted the Aam Aadmi Party government over the issue of drug abuse in Punjab.
In his social media post, Badal said the visuals had shaken the conscience of Punjab. He questioned the government’s efforts to tackle drug abuse and alleged that despite its “War Against Drugs” campaign, the government had failed to protect the state’s youth.
The latest incident comes amid continuing concern over drug-related videos and allegations emerging from Bathinda in recent weeks. Last month, the Shiromani Akali Dal shared a purported sting video alleging open sale of “chitta” in Sangat Kalan village. Following the video, police registered a case, arrested suspects and conducted a search operation in the area.
A few days later, the recovery of the body of a young man from Jaisinghwala village, with an injection reportedly found in his arm, also raised concerns over the spread of drugs in the district.
The viral Bathinda grain market video has once again brought the issue of drug abuse and the response of law enforcement agencies into public focus.
