First Punjabi Woman Arrested in Canada Extortion Case; Released on Conditional Bail

For the first time in an ongoing crackdown on extortion rings targeting the South Asian community in Canada, a woman of Punjabi origin has been arrested by law enforcement officials. The suspect, identified as Kanupreet Kaur, was apprehended by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in connection with a major extortion and intimidation case. Following her arrest, police released her on bail conditions with orders to appear before the court on October 6. According to investigators, Kaur is accused of sharing confidential personal information regarding the victim—including her home address and identity details—with the shooters and gang members involved in the operation. Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against three individuals in connection with this specific case, comprising two adults and one minor. The incident originates back to March 25, when the victim received extortion demands and threatening communications over WhatsApp from an unidentified phone number. Although police have not revealed the exact sum demanded, the culprits sought a substantial amount of money. Investigators noted that the perpetrators already possessed sensitive details, including the victim's name, residential address, business profile, and family background. Approximately 12 hours after sending the initial threat, armed perpetrators opened fire indiscriminately on the victim's residence. Official data released by the Calgary Police Service highlights a concerning rise in extortion crimes. Since April 2025, the city has recorded 51 reported extortion cases, 19 of which directly involved firearm discharges. To date, law enforcement agencies have filed 59 separate charges against 19 accused individuals across these cases. Local police have strongly urged members of the public not to succumb to panic or pay ransom demands if they receive extortion threats, advising them instead to report any such incidents immediately to the authorities.
