Large parts of North India are witnessing unusual weather conditions on Thursday and Friday, with forecasts indicating a return of winter-like chill in March. According to meteorological inputs, a strong western disturbance passing through the region is expected to bring rain, thunderstorms, snowfall, and a significant drop in temperature. Weather forecasts suggest that several regions, including Delhi NCR, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience light to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on March 20. Daytime temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with maximum temperatures ranging between 18°C and 24°C—conditions more typical of January than late March. Meteorologists have also warned of intense thunderstorm activity due to the unusual structure of the current weather system. The western disturbance is associated with a long linear trough extending across thousands of kilometres, a rare formation that can accelerate cloud development and trigger severe weather events. Higher altitude regions are expected to receive heavy snowfall. Experts have advised residents to remain cautious, as sudden weather changes, including strong winds and lightning, may pose risks. Authorities have recommended following updates issued by the India Meteorological Department for the latest advisories. The unexpected return of cold conditions has also prompted a “sweater weather” alert, with residents advised not to store away winter clothing just yet. Although this phase is expected to last only one to two days, it highlights the increasing variability in weather patterns across North India.
