Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is scheduled to visit Halwara Airport in Ludhiana today, just days after the launch of the first flight operations from the facility. The visit has gained significant political importance amid an ongoing tussle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over credit for making the airport operational. Political circles in Punjab are closely watching the development, especially after the BJP-led Central government, and particularly Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, publicly claimed major credit for the commencement of operations at the airport. Officials from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that Bhagwant Mann will review the overall arrangements and facilities at the airport following the start of regular flight services. The airport has long been considered a major demand of residents from Ludhiana and nearby areas, who had been seeking improved air connectivity for several years. The Halwara Airport project has been seen as a significant infrastructure development for the region, expected to improve travel convenience and boost economic activity in and around Ludhiana. Former Industries and Power Minister Sanjeev Arora, who is currently under arrest, had also reportedly made considerable efforts toward securing approvals and operational clearance for the airport. Since the airport’s inauguration on February 1 this year, political competition between the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP over taking credit for the project has continued to intensify. Chief Minister Mann’s visit is therefore being viewed not only as an administrative review of airport arrangements but also as an important political move amid the ongoing debate surrounding the project’s ownership and contribution.
