Justice Sheel Nagu Among Five Names Cleared for Supreme Court Elevation

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and one Senior Advocate as judges of the Supreme Court of India. The recommendations were made during the Collegium meetings held on May 22 and May 27, 2026. Among the recommended names is Justice Sheel Nagu, the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Collegium has also recommended the names of Justice Shri Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; and Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. In addition, Senior Advocate V. Mohana of the Supreme Court of India has also been recommended for elevation as a judge of the apex court. According to the Supreme Court Collegium, the following individuals have been recommended for appointment as Supreme Court judges: Justice Sheel Nagu – Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court (Parent High Court: Madhya Pradesh High Court) Justice Shri Chandrashekhar – Chief Justice, Bombay High Court (Parent High Court: Jharkhand High Court) Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva – Chief Justice, Madhya Pradesh High Court (Parent High Court: Delhi High Court) Justice Arun Palli – Chief Justice, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court (Parent High Court: Punjab and Haryana High Court) V. Mohana – Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India Following the elevation of these five individuals, the total strength of judges in the Supreme Court will increase to 37. At present, the apex court has 32 judges. The recommendations are being viewed as a significant development in the higher judiciary and are expected to strengthen the functioning of the Supreme Court.
