Punjab Farmer Allegedly Shoots Himself Amid Financial Distress

A farmer from Kallha village in the Khadur Sahib constituency allegedly died by suicide after reportedly struggling with heavy debt and financial stress. The deceased has been identified as Dilawar Singh (33), son of Surjit Singh, a resident of Kallha village. According to available information, Dilawar Singh was a small farmer who had taken nearly 35 acres of land on lease for agricultural purposes. To manage farming operations, he had reportedly borrowed around Rs 60 lakh as agricultural debt. Family members stated that Dilawar Singh suffered major financial losses this season after his pea and wheat crops were damaged due to adverse weather conditions. The losses allegedly pushed him into severe financial distress, and he had been under mental pressure for the past several days. The deceased’s wife, Ramandeep Kaur, said that her husband was deeply worried about repaying the loans taken from financial limits and other sources. She alleged that, under stress, he locked himself inside a room and shot himself using his licensed revolver. Dilawar Singh’s father, Surjit Singh, had passed away a few years ago. He is survived by his wife and son. Village sarpanch Master Baldev Singh expressed grief over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
