The Punjab Police has arrested a dismissed Army captain, Sandeep Tomar, after four years of absconding in connection with the murder of his wife. He was apprehended from Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, where he had been living under a changed identity. The arrest was made possible after the आरोपी booked an LPG cylinder online using his old PAN card while making payment through a new bank account, which led investigators to his location. Sandeep Tomar is accused of murdering his wife, Shweta Singh, and harassing her for dowry. The incident dates back to 2013, when she died at a military station quarter in Abohar. In 2014, a Fazilka court convicted him in the murder case. After serving five years in prison, he was released on bail. However, he went absconding in September 2022 after the High Court upheld his sentence and ordered him to surrender. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police traced him to a juice factory in Chhindwara, where he was working. He was brought to Abohar on Sunday, following which a court sent him to judicial custody. Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the Director General of Police to file an affidavit by April 6, 2026, explaining the delay in his arrest.
