India Seal Women’s Hockey Gold, Qualify Directly for Los Angeles 2028 Olympics

The Indian women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold by defeating hosts China 1-0 in the final on Friday. The victory also secured India a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Lalremsiami scored the only goal of the final, providing India with the decisive advantage in a closely contested match.
The final remained highly competitive, with both teams battling for control. China earned a penalty stroke during the first half, but Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia produced an important save to deny the hosts and prevent them from finding the net.
Savita’s crucial intervention helped India maintain their lead as the team defended its narrow advantage through the remainder of the contest.
The gold medal marks India’s first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games in 44 years. India had previously won the women’s hockey title in 1982 after defeating South Korea.
The Asian Games triumph also means the Indian women’s hockey team has qualified directly for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
India enjoyed a productive 13th day of competition, winning six gold medals across different events. Indian athletes also secured gold medals in women’s archery, boxing and wrestling.
With the women’s hockey gold added to the tally, India’s overall gold-medal count rose to 16. India subsequently moved to fifth place in the Asian Games medal standings.
The women’s hockey team’s victory therefore marked both a major return to the top at the Asian Games and a qualification milestone for the next Olympic Games.
