13 Mar, 2026 03:10 PM

A United States Air Force refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq, resulting in the deaths of four crew members, while two others remain missing. According to officials from United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the aircraft involved in the incident was a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. CENTCOM confirmed that six crew members were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash. Four of them have been confirmed dead, while search operations are currently underway to locate the remaining two missing crew members. Officials stated that the aircraft crashed while it was participating in an operational mission. Another US military aircraft was also part of the mission at the time; however, that aircraft remained safe and was not affected by the incident. The US military clarified that the crash was not caused by enemy action or “friendly fire.” Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the exact cause of the accident. Reports indicate that this is the fourth publicly reported aircraft accident involving the US military during the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The KC-135 Stratotanker is primarily used to refuel fighter jets in mid-air, allowing them to continue operations for extended periods without needing to land for fuel.
