SAS Nagar : In a bid to enhance the visual appeal and cleanliness of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal today chaired a high-level meeting with officials from GMADA, Municipal Corporation Mohali, and various Urban Local Bodies.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner expressed concern over the increasing issue of roadside littering and indiscriminate dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. She emphasized the urgent need for designated sites for C&D material disposal and directed GMADA officials to prepare a proposal for a large-scale recycling plant to convert such waste into usable construction items like bricks and blocks.
Highlighting the necessity of keeping roads neat and presentable, the Deputy Commissioner instructed GMADA and MC Mohali to take stringent action against littering. She noted that GMADA-managed areas have shown recurring issues with waste collection and asked for immediate corrective steps. Urban Local Bodies were also urged to ensure regular monitoring and enforcement to discourage roadside dumping.
She stressed that public awareness campaigns must accompany these actions to sensitize citizens about responsible waste disposal.
Emphasizing aesthetic improvements, the Deputy Commissioner called for the beautification of main roads connecting Mohali to Chandigarh and neighboring states. Suggestions included the development of green belts and the installation of paver blocks along roadways. In view of the monsoon, she also directed all departments to ensure proper sanitation and the prompt unblocking of choked drains to allow free flow of rainwater.
Addressing the issue of roadside vendors, she instructed the concerned authorities to identify and allocate proper vending zones to allow vendors to operate systematically without obstructing traffic or hampering beautification efforts.
A key proposal discussed was the construction of a state-of-the-art Welcome Gate at the Gateway of Punjab in Derabassi. The idea includes installation of steel signage boards similar to those on Airport Road, Mohali and roads in Zirakpur on Panchkula road, to greet and guide commuters with destination markers.
The meeting was attended by MC Mohali Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh, ADC (Urban Development) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal, GMADA Chief Engineer Anuj Sehgal, and Executive Officers of the Municipal Councils of Derabassi, Zirakpur, Kharar, Nayagaon, among others
