Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh and party’s Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot paid obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar on Thursday, seeking blessings for the new responsibilities and expressing gratitude.
The leaders also visited other religious places in the city. A large number of senior Congress leaders, former and sitting legislators, former ministers and party workers accompanied them, signalling support for the new leadership ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
One notable aspect of the visit was that Sachin Pilot drove the vehicle himself from the airport and remained with Pargat Singh throughout the programme. The visit was aimed at projecting unity within the Punjab Congress before the next Assembly elections.
Several senior leaders from different constituencies were present. However, former Punjab Congress president and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi were absent. They were reportedly attending a protest in Delhi led by Rahul Gandhi.
Pargat Singh arrived in Amritsar directly from Delhi after his appointment as Punjab Congress president. Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa was also present. At the airport, party workers welcomed him with drumbeats and celebrations.
Speaking briefly to the media, Pargat Singh refrained from making political statements at Sri Harmandir Sahib. He said he would speak openly about political matters after a day or two.
Visits to Other Religious Places
Apart from Sri Harmandir Sahib, Pargat Singh visited Durgiana Temple, St Paul’s Church and the historic Ram Tirath Temple in Amritsar.
The leaders also stopped at the city’s well-known Giani Tea Stall, where they enjoyed tea during the visit.
The presence of party leaders and workers at the religious sites was seen as an effort to demonstrate solidarity with Pargat Singh following his appointment.
Sachin Pilot Confident of Congress Victory in 2027
During the visit, Sachin Pilot expressed hope that the coming years would bring a better future for Punjab and its youth.
He said the Congress would contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections unitedly and secure a majority to form the government in the state.
Punjab Congress co-incharge Suraj Singh Thakur was among those accompanying the leaders. A large number of current and former MLAs, former ministers, party leaders, workers and supporters also participated in the programme.
The visit comes as the Congress prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections, with its leadership seeking to present a united front in Punjab.
