The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has expelled party Joint Secretary Roop Kaur Sandhu from its primary membership, citing repeated indiscipline and alleged misconduct.
The action was announced by Istri Akali Dal president Hargobind Kaur. She said the decision was taken after consultations with the party’s senior leadership and followed repeated instances of conduct that, according to the party, violated disciplinary norms.
The development comes days after Sandhu publicly said that she would make further revelations concerning alleged exploitation of women in Panthic and political circles. She had claimed that several women had approached her with allegations and said she would disclose identities and evidence, subject to security considerations.
The controversy is linked to a case involving SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla and allegations concerning an incident at a serai associated with Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib. Sandhu had earlier brought a woman from Bahrain before the camera on September 19 and repeated allegations connected with the FIR registered against Chawla, according to the information provided.
Chawla has denied the allegations and, following action by the Akal Takht, questioned the process through which the decision against him was taken. He has argued that he was not given an adequate opportunity to present his side and has disputed the allegations against him.
Sandhu subsequently said that other women had contacted her with complaints involving individuals she described as prominent Panthic and political figures in India and abroad. She said she intended to place what she described as evidence before the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and seek action where allegations were established.
The SAD, however, has said its decision to expel Sandhu was based on repeated indiscipline and misconduct. Hargobind Kaur said the disciplinary action was taken after discussions with the party’s senior leadership.
The expulsion marks a significant development in the ongoing controversy surrounding the allegations involving Chawla and the wider claims raised by Sandhu in recent days.
