US-Israel Strike on Iran Escalates Conflict; 40 Students Killed in School Attack

28 Feb, 2026 04:41 PM

A large-scale military offensive by United States and Israel against Iran has sharply escalated tensions across the Middle East. Initial strikes reportedly targeted areas around key locations in Tehran, with plumes of smoke seen rising from the capital as Iranian media reported attacks across the country. US President Donald Trump described the operation as a “major military action” and called on the Iranian people to “take control of their destiny.” In a video statement, he urged citizens to rise against the Islamic leadership that has ruled the country since 1979, suggesting this could be a rare opportunity for change. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also backed the joint operation, stating that it could create conditions for Iranians to shape their own future. The strikes mark a significant escalation and represent the second instance within eight months of the Trump administration using military force against Iran. According to Iranian media reports, a girls’ school in Minab, southern Iran, was hit during the attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 students. Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly been moved to a secure location, and access routes to his complex in Tehran have been restricted. Iran responded swiftly to the offensive, launching waves of missiles and drones targeting Israel. Subsequent strikes also hit US military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that the country “will not hesitate” to defend itself against aggression. Amid rising tensions, United Arab Emirates and Iraq have closed their airspace. Several countries have also issued advisories urging citizens and diplomatic staff to remain in safe locations. Israel said the operation followed months of planning and described it as a broad, coordinated effort targeting Iran’s military, government symbols, and intelligence infrastructure. President Trump reiterated concerns about Iran’s nuclear program and its development of long-range missiles capable of reaching the United States. He also acknowledged the potential for American casualties and called on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to lay down arms. The conflict could have significant global economic implications, particularly if the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz becomes unsafe for trade. Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have vowed to resume attacks in the Red Sea and against Israel, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
